Profile

DeSci.Tokyo

Hiro Taiyo Hamada: As a member of the first cohort at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST), I completed my doctoral degree in the Science and Technology Research Program, and now conduct research on systems neuroscience and cognitive neuroscience at Araya Corporation. I have witnessed research systems that lack diversity, and my vision is to build an ecosystem that supports diverse research and accelerates innovation. Decentralized science is a movement that resonates with my vision, and I ask for your support in making this vision a reality.

Shiro Takagi: I am conducting research independently on machine learning with the aim of realizing autonomous artificial researcher. I am also interested in the way research is conducted, and would like to contribute to the construction of better research systems. My ideal research environment is one that is “optimal for knowledge production” and “allows anyone who wants to conduct research to do so in good physical and mental health, regardless of their background.” I believe that DeSci is a powerful movement towards achieving such a research environment, and I would be delighted to work with you to promote this movement.

Kyosuke Iyama: Currently pursuing a master’s degree at the Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo. I am a core member of multiple DeSci projects and operate DeSci Japan, a Japanese community in the field of decentralized science.

Kazuki Nemoto: A fourth-year student at the School of Economics, Tohoku University. I am involved in the operation of the research community “Mitsubachi” and serve as a core member of the Mitsubachi DAO PJ. I am also engaged in research as a research assistant at UC Berkeley and UTMD.

Kiwamu Sato: An IT consultant who joined with the purpose of using technology to solve social issues in public areas such as art and culture, and academic research. My strengths lie in research and analysis that focuses on the social impact of technology, including domestic and international startup case studies and technology trend investigations.

What is your research vision?

Research has produced knowledge that supports our lives and drives innovation, but academia is currently facing complex challenges such as limited research funding sources and inadequate time for research. These difficulties stem in part from academia’s reliance on centralized governance systems. To create a better research system, it is essential to establish an environment that allows ambitious researchers to engage in bottom-up activities in addition to the current system.

One approach that has gained attention is “Decentralized Science (DeSci).” DeSci is a movement that aims to construct a democratic research system supported by a decentralized governance system using technologies such as blockchain. For example, by utilizing autonomous decentralized organizations (DAOs) and evaluation systems based on blockchain technology, DeSci aims to create new research grant systems, publish papers, and build research infrastructure. We aspire to play a role in promoting the progress of this movement.

How do you realize your vision?

The DeSci movement has been gaining momentum since around 2022, and meetups and hackathons are being held around the world, such as DeSci.Berlin and DeSci.London. These movements act as central hubs that welcome individuals with a shared interest in constructing diverse research systems into the DeSci community. As like-minded individuals come together and draw inspiration from DeSci’s leaders, fresh ideas and activities are generated. We are convinced that DeSci has the capacity to transform the future of research worldwide, as evidenced by the emergence of DeSci.Africa in Africa.

However, DeSci is a new concept, and discussions are needed to determine what problems in academia, which has been constructed in a centralized manner, DeSci can solve and which research fields it is compatible with. Therefore, we have made the decision to establish DeSci.Tokyo. With DeSci.Tokyo, our objective is to develop a network of researchers and experts who are interested in DeSci, provide a forum for individuals to share their challenges and aspirations, and function as a central hub that links Japan to the global community.

What is the research theme of this crowdfunding project?

As a first step, we aim to hold the “DeSci Tokyo Conference 2023" in April 16th 2023 in Tokyo. At this event, we plan to invite people who are leading DeSci around the world and those who are working to construct a better research system in Japan to give lectures. We will also provide opportunities for participants to network and exchange ideas, thereby facilitating opportunities for people who aspire to create a better research system to meet. Additionally, we are considering enabling participants to communicate continuously through Discord after the event. Our goal is to serve as a catalyst for people who aspire to construct a better research system, providing a stepping stone for each person to take their next steps in their own way.

Why we need your support

We have attempted to use academist to raise funds for the launch of DeSci.Tokyo. The funds raised will be used for event expenses and DeSci.Tokyo’s operational costs. We have prepared expressions of gratitude for those who support us, such as priority participation rights for DeSci.Tokyo’s Discord and participation tickets for Meetups before and after the event, so you can experience the excitement of DeSci.Tokyo firsthand. We would be grateful if you could consider supporting us.

Through “DeSci Tokyo Conference 2023,” we aim to advance discussions on the future of DeSci in Japan and create opportunities for the birth of DeSci projects. We intend to manage the community and develop it further. Thank you in advance for your support!

In contemporary academic research, traditional operational and funding mechanisms present numerous challenges, often hindering scientists from pursuing innovative, out-of-the-box ideas. To address this issue, young researchers like Dr. Hamada are promoting a movement called DeSci (Decentralized Science) to explore new ways research is conducted. As DeSci is gaining traction globally, DeSci Tokyo is poised to significantly expand in Japan, fostering a fertile ground for innovative research. Let’s support DeSci and collaborate to shape the future of scientific research.

I have been discussing decentralized science with Dr. Hamada, who is involved with gftdDAO that provides services and products to people with developmental disorders and high IQs. Decentralized science is a movement to build a diverse research ecosystem beyond the traditional academia. This movement is happening all over the world and is beginning to spread in Japan as well. I hope that Dr. Hamada's activities will lead to a new research ecosystem in the coming years.

Congratulations on the launch of DeSciTokyo! I am impressed by the enthusiasm and efforts of the organizers. My heart leaps with excitement towards the development of new science and the realization of a world with higher resolution through DeSci. I am thrilled that not only scientists but also a diverse range of people can come together, create chemical reactions, and give birth to a new worldview. Starting with the success of this event, I hope that DeSciTokyo will continue to grow, and more and more people will participate in exciting exchanges.

The key to the future of science is 'decentralization'. Research, publishing, funding, data, materials, human resources, and everything else no longer needs to be tied to a location, affiliation, someone's fame, or ties to someone else. The DeSci.Tokyo Conference 2023 will gather a variety of players who share the goal of implementing this new space, and it is everyone involved in DeSci who will realize DeSci. You can be one of them, and let's do science freely together!

Decentralized Science (DeSci) has been gaining attention as a new operational method to promote scientific research and technological development. It can be used in any field through mechanisms such as NFT and DAO. I also hope to utilize it for basic research and big science. First, it is necessary to deepen the understanding among many people. With the establishment of DeSci's base in Japan, I would like your support. Please cheer us on!
