自閉症 vs オーティズム ('Jiheisho' vs Autism)

自閉症という言葉はどうして良くないのか？ (Why ‘Jiheisho’, a Japanese term for autism, is not ideal?)

私は、自閉症という言葉は偏見を招く言葉だと思うので使いません。代わりに、オーティズムまたは形容詞のオーティスティックを使用します。もともと英語のAutismという言葉はギリシャ語で自分を意味するAutosに接尾辞のismが付いた言葉であり、自閉症という和訳が示す「自分を閉じる病気」という意味はありません。　

I do not use the Japanese translation of autism, ‘Jiheisho’ because it literally means ‘self-closed-disorder’ in Japanese and I believe that using that Japanese word can create an unnecessary stigma against autistic people. Instead, I use ‘outizum’ or its adjective ‘outistic’ in line with the original English word, autism. Autism comes from the Greek term, autos meaning self and the suffix of ism. Only when translated into Japanese, autism got a bit more color.
