Shiro Yamazaki
Beyblade is a great educational tool for learning science in a fun way.
I received my PhD in Physics from the Graduate School of Science at the University of Tokyo, then received the Young Scientist Award of the Physical Society of Japan, and currently work in physics research and also education at the Department of Physics, School of Science, Institute of Science Tokyo. I am not only just a physicist but also a science communicator, providing science commentary on a lot of TV programs such as NHK Educational, and supervising many films such as "TENET."
In 2014, by chance, I was asked to be a guest commentator for a spinning top tournament in Japan called "Koma Taisen." At the tournament, surprisingly I was also invited to take part in the competition itself just because there were few available slots. I joined the competition as a kind of joke. At first, I thought I would lose soon in the first round. But I continuously won, getting gradually serious more and more. And amazingly, I ended up winning the competition without reading between the lines! Since then, my life has restarted as "Dr. Spinning Top,"
Spinning tops are the perfect teaching material for learning science in a fun way. After the winning of the competition, I have studied the spinning top competition scientifically and written a book called "The Science of Spinning Tops." And in 2024, I had a destined encounter with Beyblade. My current dream is to study Beyblade scientifically, then give lectures on the "Science of Beyblades" to Beyblade players not only in Japan but also in the world, then finally write a book on the "Science of Beyblades." We prove that Beyblade is the best teaching material for learning science in a fun way.

What do you hope to achieve through your research?
While working as a researcher of physics at the university, I also spend a lot of effort to tell how science is interesting to ordinally people as a science communicator. Because I received such science communication activities from real scientist when I was a young student, I was getting interested in science, and finally science turn out to be my current my job. To return the favor, now I deeply feel that I want to tell how science is interesting to students and ordinally people as a scientist. However, many people feel science in not easy to understand and even not interesting. Although a scientist talks about a formal science as it is, almost no one is interested in it.
Then I have paid attention to spinning top. Spinning top is just a fun toy, and a lot of essence of science in it. For example, people may have questions such as “Why spinning top does not fall down?” “What kind of shape is the best for spinning for long time” “Which one is the strongest spinning top?” Such question can be explained by physical terms such as angular momentum, moment of inertia, gyro effect. Then, great idea came to me. The idea is we can learn science by having fun with spinning tops.
What approach are you taking to achieve this goal?
In 2014, I won at the spinning top competition in Japan called “koma Taisen”, then I took a part of the world match of the competition. Taking this as an opportunity, I have become “Dr. Spinning Top”, and I have given science shows about spinning tops more than 200 times in almost every area in Japan and even in abroad countries. By gathering all experience on spinning tops, I finally have written a book “The Science of Spinning Tops”. After the book, I developed a lot of educational spinning top, write special features of spinning tops on several journals. And my activities on spinning top as “Dr. Spinning top” was featured on several TV program such as NHK education. As I shown, spinning tops have been my life itself. An event had changed my life completely, the event was the first encounter with Beyblade.
January in 2025, by gathering a lot of “Beigoma”, the Japanese traditional spinning top, and Beyblade as a modern spinning top, and spinning tops of “Koma Taisen”, “Spinning top exhibition” has held in a lot of shopping centers in all over Japan. Fortunately, I was the scientific director of the exhibition. After the encounter with Beyblade, I have completely been loving it. Recently, we have held “Beyblade workshop” every month, exactly we have learned science by having fun with Beyblade. And now, by gathering the results of “Beyblade workshop”, I have prepared a lecture on “Science of Beyblade”. In the future, I will write a book “Science of Beyblade”, this is my current dream.
What is the research theme of this project?
Here we show a little bit what kind of science we can learn by using Beyblade. For example, you may have had a question such as “Why does Wizard Rod spin for long time”. Actually, it is strongly related to the physical term “moment of inertia”. A question such as “Why is Shark Scale so strong” can be explained by physical way of thinking called “center of mass”. And a question such as “Why is Ball bit so persistent?” is good starting point to learn what gyro effect is and the role of friction on the effect. From a question “Why is Extreme Dash possible?”, I have successfully derived “Extreme Dash equation” for the first time in the world. As I shown here, we really can learn science by having fun with Beyblade. Finally, I want to tell you one message on Beyblade. “Let’s me show you more important things than Victory.”
Why we need your support
I won on the spinning top competition “Koma Taisen”, then I wrote the book “Science of Spinning top” based on the experience. However, actually I don’t have enough knowledge and experience on Beyblade. That is why, I really need your knowledge and experience!
We will very carefully use your precious support fund as research and operate expenses of “Beyblade workshop”, and also preparation expenses of a lecture on “Science of Beyblade” and the traveling expenses to bring the lecture to Beyblade player in the world.
We promise here, we will succeed this crowdfunding, we will complete scientific research on Beyblade together with Beyblade players attending “Beyblade workshop”, we will bring the lecture on “Science of Beyblade” to Beyblade player in the world, and we will write the book on “Science of Beyblade” as a final aim.
